Leopard geckos are so often kept in small, poorly lit housing that doesn’t encourage them to express their full range of behaviours. Our habitat set has been designed by us using all our extensive product knowledge and experience to provide your leopard gecko with the best living space available – and all at a very reasonable price. Plenty of space, a good temperature gradient and access to low levels of UVB for optimum health means your gecko will be happy, healthy and live a long and comfortable life!
Glass terrariums can make excellent habitats for most of the smaller species of lizard, and the terrarium included in this habitat kit is no exception. As glass loses heat far more quickly than wood does, you can achieve the same temperature gradient in a more compact space. This terrarium gives a single gecko lots of room to move around, and there is enough floor space for several hides and branches to enrich your new pets’ life. Although they are ground living geckos, leopard geckos do enjoy exploring different levels within their habitat and this terrarium gives enough space to provide a variety of branches, hides and other decor to keep them happy.
The compact top included holds both heat lamps and the UV light that your gecko needs; as a crepuscular gecko they do not need the high levels of UVB that a day active, basking lizard does, but they benefit enormously from access to low levels of UVB. The bulb provided supplies enough UV to reach the levels of UV to create a Ferguson Zone of 1, perfect for the dawn and dusk active leopard gecko.
The heat bulbs give a gentle heat above the terrarium which creates the temperature gradient necessary for the health of your gecko. These should be turned off at night, giving your gecko the chance to experience a natural temperature drop just as they would in the wild. In order to stop the temperature dropping too low, however, additional heat is provided by a heat mat controlled by a thermostat.
The heat mat provided works best when it is attached to the outside bottom of the terrarium. Because the terrarium has been designed to allow an air gap underneath, there is no pressure on the mat which means that it will not overheat and can gently heat the substrate from underneath. The self adhesive backing on this mat ensures a trouble free, secure method of fixing the heat mat to the base of your pets’ habitat with no danger to your pet.
The thermostat included with this habitat kit is a basic on/off model, with LED lights as power and heating indicators. All reptiles benefit from a temperature drop at night, and this unit makes sure that the temperature never dips below the set levels. Using this thermostat makes sure that, even if your heat lights fail, the temperature in the vivarium will never drop below nighttime levels; it also ensures that there is no power wasted by running a heat mat when it isn’t necessary.
One of the most important items of equipment in all of reptile keeping is the digital thermometer! The thermometer that we include with this habitat is reliable, robust and with two probes it’s possible to monitor both the cool and warm ends of the vivarium at the same time. We have been using these units for years now, both in store and personally – and we think that they are just right for keeping track of the temperatures in your pets’ enclosure.
