Description
Many years of experience with keeping corn snakes and a great deal of product knowledge went into the creation of this entry level habitat kit. It has been designed to use robust, efficient products that will keep your corn snake happy and healthy, and it’s simple to upgrade if you wish. Corn snakes can be very variable in size, and should they exceed 90cm in length then the next size up should be purchased. This setup is suitable for most small colubrids, such as king snakes, African house snakes, garter snakes, milk and rat snakes, but again should be replaced if they get larger than 90cm.
The wooden vivarium that forms the base of this habitat is large enough to provide a good heat gradient whilst allowing your young snake plenty of room to move and exercise. It is also very secure, although do take care to ensure that the vents in the back are seated properly – and the right way round. The wooden sides allow the snake to feel secure, and the front glass gives the owner a good view into their pets’ habitat.
Daytime heating is provided by a low wattage incandescent heat bulb. This will provide a basking spot during the day for the snake, and will also gently heat the air in the vivarium, providing a heat gradient across the whole space.
Safety with heat lamps is paramount, and the lamp holder in this setup is a solid, reliable unit that will give you years of trouble free service. The ceramic holder itself is heat resistant and rated for up to 200 watts, with the E27 screw fitting ensuring compatibility with a wide range of commonly available vivarium heat lamps. It also features a unique 180 degree rotating bracket which allows ultimate flexibility, and precision aiming of your bulb in order to create a basking hotspot anywhere you would want to put it. It also has an in line on/off switch, and a heat resistant cable.
When using heat bulbs around snakes, it is vitally important to provide an adequate heat guard. For ease of use the one provided with this habitat kit is robust and easy to fit. Due to its innovative design it is easy to access the heat bulb when it needs changing, and is robust enough to last for years.
The heat mat provided should be mounted on the wall of the vivarium, NOT the floor as is more traditional. It provides a gentle heat gradient and prevents the temperature from bottoming out at night whilst allowing a night time temperature drop, just as they would get in the wild. The self adhesive backing ensures that the mat is fixed firmly and safely to the wall, with no chance of the snake getting tangled in any adhesives or the substrate being ignited should the mat malfunction.
The thermostat included with this habitat kit is a basic on/off model, with LED lights as power and heating indicators. All reptiles benefit from a temperature drop at night, and this unit makes sure that the temperature never dips below the set levels. Using this thermostat makes sure that, even if your heat light fails, the temperature in the vivarium will never drop below nighttime levels; it also ensures that there is no power wasted by running a heat mat when it isn’t necessary.
One of the most important items of equipment in all of reptile keeping is the digital thermometer! The thermometer that we include with this habitat is reliable, robust and with two probes it’s possible to monitor both the cool and warm ends of the vivarium at the same time. We have been using these units for years now, both in store and personally – and we think that they are just right for keeping track of the temperatures in your pets’ enclosure.
Should you require a cabinet for your new vivarium, this particular item is designed to form a complete unit with the Viva+ vivariums. It attaches directly to the bottom of the vivarium, forming a sturdy support along the whole length of the base. Looks wise, it completes the setup into a solid, attractive piece of furniture that complement any living space, as well as providing storage space for the items that you need to keep your young snake happy and healthy.
