Caring for mealworms and gut loading

Mealworms are best kept in a well ventilated tub with a large floor area such as a such as a flat faunarium. This should have 2cm of dry bug grub as both a food and a substrate to burrow in. They will also need a small amount of fruit or vegetable such as carrot, apple or potato as a source of water. They will need to kept between 20c and 25c.

Remember to also use a vitamin/mineral supplement and calcium supplement on the locusts when you feed your pet.

Feeding mealworms to wild birds

Live mealworms are packed with protein and moisture and are an excellent bird food. They can quickly attract birds such as robins and thrushes to your garden.

They are great food for the winter months, helping the birds keep weight on. In spring, busy parents are desperately foraging to feed their growing chicks so give them a hand by putting a bowl of mealworms out for them.
