Description
Calci worms are the larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). The larvae and adult flies are eaten by many species. They are know as calci worms due to their high calcium content. Â Calci worms are very good for bulking up young or underweight animals. We feed our store bred bearded dragons and leopard geckos on calci worms as part of their varied diets and are very proud of the condition of our animals.
How they come
Calci worms are packed in a vented tub with some moist coconut fibre substrate.
How to care for calci worms
They are best kept between 20-25c and feed some vegetables such carrot, potato etc. The tubs that we send them in are suitable to house them in and will prevent the flies from escaping.
When the worms are young they are a nice creamy white colour. They will turn to a brown or black colour just before they pupate in to flies. The flies are a good food to and provide a bit of a challenge to your lizard and are particularly good for chameleon target practice!
Soldier flies are very good food for mantis.
