Kimberley Rock Monitor – Quick Care Guide
The Kimberley Rock Monitor (Varanus glauerti) is a small, fast, and intelligent Australian monitor. They love to climb, explore, and bask in very hot spots. With the right setup, they become confident, active pets for experienced keepers.
Enclosure
- Minimum size: (6 × 4 × 6 ft)
- Ideal: Larger and taller if possible
- Provide lots of height, climbing branches, rock ledges, and secure hiding places.
- Excellent ventilation is essential.
Heating & Lighting
- Basking spot: 48–50°C
- Warm side: 32–35°C
- Cool end: 24–28°C
- Night: 18–20°C
- Use a dimming thermostat for safety.
UVB
- T5 12% UVB tube
- Aim for UVI 3–6 at the basking area
- 12‑hour day/night cycle
Humidity & Water
- Keep humidity 30–50%
- Provide a fresh water bowl
- Light misting once or twice a week is fine
Substrate
- Sand–soil mix, EarthMix Arid, or similar
- Depth of 10–15 cm for natural digging
Diet
- Mainly insects: crickets, locusts, roaches, worms
- Juveniles: feed daily
- Adults: 4–5 times per week
- Supplements:
- Calcium every feed
- Multivitamin once a week
Behaviour & Handling
- Very active and alert
- Become confident with calm, consistent interaction
- Use tongs and target training to build trust
- Avoid sudden movements
Cleaning
- Spot clean daily
- Replace substrate every 6–8 weeks
- Clean water bowl daily
