Alice Sundew

The Alice Sundew (Drosera aliciae) is a charming and compact carnivorous plant, loved for its rosette of spoon‑shaped leaves covered in glistening, sticky “dew.” These sparkling droplets attract small insects, which become gently trapped and digested by the plant. It’s an easy, rewarding species that’s perfect for beginners and a beautiful addition to any terrarium or windowsill display.

Natural History

Native to South Africa, the Alice Sundew grows in sunny, open wetlands with nutrient‑poor, acidic soils. Because the soil offers very little nutrition, the plant evolved its sticky leaves to catch insects. Each leaf is lined with tiny tentacles tipped with sweet, glistening mucilage. When prey lands on the leaf, the tentacles slowly curl inward, helping the plant absorb valuable nutrients. In the wild, they thrive in warm, bright conditions with regular rainfall and mineral‑free water sources.

Care Information

Alice Sundews are wonderfully straightforward to care for when their natural needs are met:

  • Light: Bright light is essential. A sunny windowsill or strong grow light keeps the plant compact, colourful and covered in dew.
  • Water: Always use demineralised water, rainwater or distilled water. Keep the soil consistently damp by standing the pot in a shallow tray of water.
  • Soil: Use a carnivorous plant mix such as sphagnum peat moss with perlite. Avoid compost or fertiliser — these can harm the plant.
  • Feeding: They catch their own insects. Indoors, you can offer the occasional tiny insect, but it’s not required.
  • Dormancy: Unlike some carnivorous plants, Alice Sundews do not need a cold winter rest. They grow year‑round with steady warmth and light.

With the right care, the Alice Sundew produces beautiful, dew‑covered leaves all year round and is a delightful, interactive plant for both new and experienced carnivorous plant keepers.
